Helping someone with Medicare
This path is for adult children, spouses, relatives, and friends who are helping someone else understand Medicare. It is organized around tasks you can actually do.
Tasks you can do right now
- Gather the basics A short checklist of the information that makes every later conversation easier.
- Prepare the questions What to ask before comparing any coverage.
- Help them compare options The tradeoff framework, usable together on one screen.
- Bring in a person A licensed advisor can talk with you and the person you help — together or separately.
Gather the basics
Before any comparison or call, collect these — with the person’s knowledge:
- Their red, white, and blue Medicare card (or whether they have one yet).
- A list of their doctors, clinics, and preferred hospitals.
- A current list of prescription drugs, with doses.
- Any other coverage they have today (employer, retiree, Medicaid, VA, marketplace).
- What they pay monthly now, and what would strain their budget.
Questions to ask together
- Are their doctors and prescriptions covered by any option being considered?
- What would they pay monthly, and what could they pay when they use care?
- How does coverage work when they travel or spend part of the year elsewhere?
- Who do they call when something goes wrong — and is that easy for them?
The compare coverage path walks through each of these tradeoffs in more detail.
What this path assumes — and what it does not
This Alpha does not assume you have legal authority to act for the person you help, and it never asks you to diagnose or describe their medical conditions. Enrollment decisions belong to the person themselves unless they have given someone legal authority. A licensed advisor can explain what permission a call or enrollment conversation requires.

A licensed advisor can answer questions about your situation. The service is free; there is no obligation to enroll in anything.
